DINA GONZÁLEZ MASCARÓ
Dina González Mascaró is a multifaceted artist who has mastered the intricate dance of volume, structure, and narrative through her diverse body of work. Born and trained in Argentina, she now lives and works in Vancouver, carrying her rich heritage into the tapestry of Canadian art. Her academic foundation was laid at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she received her MFA in sculpture and contributed as an educator, nurturing the next generation of artists.
Dina's journey in the arts took a pivotal turn when she was honoured with Ahonoureda’s National Art Prize, the Premio Antorchas, in 2000, which was closely followed by an enriching residency at the Banff Centre for the Fine Arts. Her explorative spirit led her further into the embrace of the Western Front, where a year-long residency in 2002 marked the beginning of her Vancouver-based art practice.
The essence of Dina's work is an exploration of volume, transcending beyond the confines of any single medium. Her sculptural endeavours are a testament to this, as she delves into themes of structure, architecture, construction, and demolition, seamlessly weaving in elements of nature, decay, memory, and loss. Her relentless pursuit of expression finds form in various mediums including drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, installation, and objects, not excluding the fine craft of jewelry.
In her latest series, Dina González Mascaró embarks on a profound narrative journey through her "Larnaxes," terra cotta vessels inspired by ancient Greek sepulchral chests. These vessels serve as a metaphor for transformation, holding space for the metamorphosis of life, death, and the metaphysical. Each piece a testament to the intertwining of the material, natural, and metaphysical worlds, inviting viewers to ponder the ontological relationship between life and death.
Dina's work is not confined to the traditional realms of art. In July of 2008, she further blurred the lines between art and craftsmanship by opening JewellerBau Gallery 42, a studio and shop on Main Street, where her sculptures find form in jewelry, each piece a wearable narrative.
Her multidisciplinary approach is encapsulated in her series "Vessels are Never Empty," eloquently discussed by Joelle Ciona in East Van Ceramics Monthly. This series delves into the metaphysical, viewing vessels as containers of memories, spirits, and transformative organs, embodying Dina's unique, feminist narrative that dances between mythology and corporeality.
Dina González Mascaró’s journey is not just an exploration of forms and materials but a continuous dialogue with life itself, a dialogue that resonates deeply with viewers, compelling them to introspect and respond. Her work, echoing the structures of our existence and the unseen forces that shape our lives, invites us into a world where every volume holds a story, every structure narrates a saga, and every vessel, never truly empty, whispers the profound tales of life and beyond.
